Community Occupational Therapy Service

Community Occupational Therapy Team

Who we are and what we do

Our focus is to help you live as independently as possible within your own home. Our team will assess your needs, provide advice, equipment, or minor adaptations to support you to live at home. The Community Occupational Therapy Service is available to everyone living in South Ayrshire, no matter their age - from babies to older adults.

Aids and Adaptations for Independent Living

We can give information, aids and adaptations to help people with a physical disability live as independently as possible at home.  If you or a member of your family has a disability, we may be able to help you by:

  • Providing special equipment to help you with daily living
  • Making changes to your current home
  • Giving advice about re-housing

Please see Service Details below for further information.

Who can Apply

If you or someone in your family has a disability, you can apply for support. After you apply, our trained staff will visit your home to see what help you might need. Sometimes, we can give you equipment during the visit. Other times, we may need to recommend equipment or changes to your home. If that happens, there may be a wait or another assessment before you get the support.

Special Equipment

Depending on what you need, you might only need some equipment to help you stay in your current home.  After an assessment, we can offer a wide range of equipment to help you stay independent with everyday tasks, for example equipment to help get in and out of the bath, shower stools, toileting equipment. This equipment is loaned to you for as long as you need it.

Adapting your present home

If special equipment isn't enough to help you live on your own, changes can be made to your home. These changes are permanent and can be small, like adding handrails, or big, like changing the layout of a room.

Minor adaptations

These are simple adaptations, such as adding grabrails beside the bath or shower, or handrails outside your home.  Click here to make a request for a handrail.

Major adaptations

These types of changes are more complex and depend on the layout and structure of your home. Examples include swapping a bath for a shower, widening doorways, changing the kitchen layout, or replacing steps with a ramp.

Re-housing

Sometimes, it is not possible to make the changes needed to your current home. If that happens, we are happy to talk with you about other options, including moving to a more suitable home.

How to Access our Services

A request for service is known as a referral.  We accept referrals from members of the public and from other professionals.  We will accept a referral to the service directly from the person who needs it, or from a person acting on their behalf, if the person being referred has given permission to make a referral.

Please use the link below to send a referral. Please include as much detail as you can to help avoid delays. This is not an emergency service, so referrals are handled in the order they come in.  There will be a waiting period before the team are able to contact the person being referred.

Many other services are provided by our partners in health and care.   Before you make a referral, be sure to read the sections on this page that set out service details as well as other helpful services.
