Adoption Support: Find out about the support available
Support when Adopting
When you are looking after a child, they will continue to have their own social worker until the adoption is final and an adoption order is granted. For the first 3 years after the adoption is approved, the child's local council will be responsible for giving adoption support. After that, your own local council will take over.
You will also have your own support worker. They will help you with everyday tasks and offer emotional support related to the adoption.
After Adoption
Adoption is lifelong and we understand that support may be needed at different points throughout the childhood years and beyond.
Adoptive families
As a South Ayrshire approved adopter you will become part of our adoption community, where you will be invited to support groups and kept up to date with what's happening in our service through our quarterly newsletters.
Adoptee's
We can offer individual support to adoptees.
Staying Connected - Letterbox exchange
We offer support to birth families and adoptive families who participate in a letterbox exchange and can help with the writing of letters. We are keen to make the letterbox exchange as meaningful for children as possible.
Step-Parent Adoption
We also carry out assessments for step-parents who want to adopt. We then send a report to the Sheriff's Court to help them decide if the step-parent is suitable to adopt.
- If you are a step-parent who wants to adopt, you can let us know through your lawyer/legal representative. Please note the Sheriff Court can also ask us to write a report about whether you're suitable to adopt.
Please contact us if you need further information regarding the process for step-parent adoptions.
