Children with disabilities
Children and Families Disability Team
Our Children and Families Disability Team is a specialist social work team within Children and Families Services.
We provide assessments and support based on an eligibility criteria. Most children with additional needs will not require the targeted, specialist support of this team.
Who We Are
Our team includes:
- Social Workers
- Resource Workers
- Support Workers
- Family Support Workers
- Children and Family Assistants
Who Can Access Support from the Children and Families Disability Team?
- Children and young people with a complex disability whose needs cannot be met by universal services (i.e. education and health) or community resources alone.
- Their families need additional support around the impact of their child's disability.
Any young people referred require to be under the age of 18 and still in full-time education at point of referral.
Getting Support
South Ayrshire uses a Team Around the Family (TAF) approach. This means a group of practitioners work together to improve a child's wellbeing, keeping the child and family at the centre.
The TAF model ensures children get the right help, at the right time, from the right people.
All new referrals to Children and Families Social Work go through our Initial Response Team. Referrals are screened before being allocated to the appropriate team for assessment.
What Happens Next?
If your child meets the eligibility criteria they will be allocated to the Children and Families Disability Team for further assessment.
We will carry out an assessment of need, which looks at strengths and areas where support is needed. We will work with others involved in the Team Around the Family as part of this process.
