Introduction to Welfare Rights


Please note, the rationale of the training is not to make staff in any way responsible in carrying out additional roles, the rational is to raise awareness of the issues that are current, and how best to identify, support and refer clients on to the Information and Advice Hub that they may come into contact with in their daily roles.

Learning Outcomes

This session will cover:

Introduction to Welfare Rights

  • Administrative structure of the benefit system including the role of the DWP, HMRC, Social Security Scotland and the Local Authority.
  • Means and Non-Means Tested Benefits
  • Universal Credit and Legacy benefits
  • Disability Benefits
  • Social Security Scotland devolved benefits update
  • Up and coming changes that may affect service users (team specific for example Children and Families - Child Disability Payment)


  • Spot the signs of Debt  
  • Service Overview of The Information and Advice Hub
  • How we can help with Welfare Benefits 
  • How we are trying to prevent debt
  • Identifying when to make a referral

Who Should Attend

All staff and services across Health Social Care Partnership (HSCP).

Course Length

This course is a 90 Minute Online session via Microsoft Teams.
