Heartwarming harmonies at Nursery Court: Intergenerational choir brings joy and connection in Girvan

A unique partnership between local early years children and adult day care service users has struck a joyful chord in Girvan, as a recently completed 6-week intergenerational choir project at Nursery Court Day Service made a meaningful impact on the lives of all involved.
As we celebrate Intergenerational Week from 24th - 30th April 2025, we are shining a light on this inspiring initiative that used music and shared learning to build meaningful connections between generations. Led by Beatrice Clark, known to many as The Music Lady, the choir became a source of joy, laughter, and genuine friendship.
The project brought together six children from Girvan Early Years Centre and twelve older adults from Nursery Court Day Service in a heartwarming shared experience of music, learning and companionship.
Councillor Hugh Hunter said, "I had the privilege of being invited to hear this fantastic choir in their final performance which brought together friends, family, staff and members of the Girvan community. All those in attendance were delighted to be part of this special day and celebrate this example of real community spirit. The choir is more than just a musical group - it is a bridge between generations. Each session brought a vibrant performance, filled with smiles, laughter, and community spirit".
The intergenerational choir offered far more than just singing. The children taught the older adults Makaton, a unique method of communication that uses symbols (pictures) and signs (gestures), and speech to help people communicate. This shared learning experience empowered the children to take the lead, while giving the older adults a new way to connect and express themselves.
In return, the older participants shared their life stories and memories, enriching the children's understanding of the past. They also sang songs from throughout their lives, offering a glimpse into the music of different eras, bringing history to life through melodies.
Billy McClean, Head of Community Health and Care Services praised the initiative, saying "This is such a beautiful example of the power of community and connection. Projects like this choir demonstrates how intergenerational engagement can break down barriers, improve wellbeing, and create lasting bonds. It is inspiring to see the joy and friendship shared between our youngest and oldest citizens".
For the older adults, the initiative has helped reduce isolation and improve overall wellbeing. The sessions have also given the older participants a renewed sense of purpose. The energy and activity of the children have also helped to encourage more physical movements, generally making the adults more mobile and improving their strength.
For the children, visiting Nursery Court and taking part in the choir has helped build their confidence and improved their communication and social skills. Their companionship has also encouraged the children to foster empathy and have an understanding about older generations.
As communities prepare to celebrate the benefits of intergenerational connection this week, this heartwarming initiative stands as a shining example of how different generations can come together to enrich each other's lives.
Beatrice Clark, who led the Intergenerational choir, said; "We've had many stories and laughter along the rewarding road. Girvan is a special place for community and a real magic was felt by not only people attending the choir, but by those who work in the care and education sector. Each and every person I worked with on this project was fully immersed to the cause. We are very fortunate to have such dedicated and special people in care and education.
Intergenerational choirs provide an opportunity for people to make new friendships and interact with people they might not normally have the chance to meet. This is particularly important with those who may not have the opportunity for social interaction and may feel isolated. All in all, an excellent outcome."
Intergenerational Week puts a national spotlight on building connections between younger and older people, the intergenerational choir at Nursery Court proves that companionship has a great impact on mood and wellbeing. The choir is a celebration of what can be achieved when generations come together. With songs, stories, and shared laughter, Nursery Court has been filled with music, smiles and meaning.
